College Course: Concert Report -Top $ Raz by Peter Stern
Top $ Raz at Sullivan Hall August 13th, 2011
At about midnight the message showed up on Twitter: “Kinda amazing that this dude who used to work for me somehow maybe greatest unsigned sound I’ve ever heard.” It was my introduction to Top $ Raz, which comes close to encapsulating how surprising it is to discover that someone you work with should probably have a hit single in heavy rotation on the radio. Coming out of Far Rockaway, Queens and a clear veteran of the lyrical battles and showdowns of numerous hip hop shows, he boasted recently of having freestyle rhymed eight different words with “Dothraki”. Like Method Man and Ghostface Killah before him, Raz makes extensive use of pop culture reference, with the title of the latest album The New Flesh coming from David Cronenberg’s Videodrome. His track “The Man” off of that album is a virtuoso and endlessly inventive brag; with references to the Unabomber, Hotel Rwanda and bilingual wordplay, Raz threatens to be a terror of the stage, kill on the mic, then come over and eat your lunch like Gordon Gekko if you don’t listen up to the man.
